Manchester United are 90 minutes away from a place in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League.

The competition, which mirrors that of the Champions League in the early stages, has now split from the senior tournament. But Nicky Butt's U19s side will be hoping to emulate Jose Mourinho's first team by beating Brodarac to reach the next round.

United's youngsters have participated in events to mark the 60th anniversary of the Munich air disaster while out in Belgrade.

But attention now turns to on-field matters against a side that have seen off Maccabi Haifa and Saburtalo to reach this stage.

Angel Gomes is expected to start after missing Sunday's u23 league game, but Tahith Chong has been left at home following two excellent performances for the reserves.

Ro-Shaun Williams and Indy Boonen are also expected to be among the starters.

FT Brodarac 0-2 United

United are through to the last 16!

86mins: Chance United!

Argh! Bughail-Mellor shoots just wide from a tight angle after brilliant work from Angel Gomes.

82 mins: Boonen replaced

Indy Boonen is replaced by Brandon Williams.

0-2

Gomes fouled again

Angel Gomes constantly fouled whenever he tries anything. The hosts now asking for time to be added for the stoppages... most of which have been to show them yellow cards.

0-2

Refereering questions

The standard of reffing here (and tackling, mind) is distinctly sub par.

68 minutes: Yellows for Brodarac

The first for a bad foul on Angel Gomes and now for a shove at a corner. Silly, this.

62 mins: Challenge O'Connor!

Excellent challenge from O’Connor to give United some respite. Under the cosh here, somewhat.

0-2

Bohui down

A ridiculously high challenge has Joshua Bohui on the floor receiving treatment. No idea why the Brodarac player is protesting his yellow card - could easily have been red.

Second half under way

Back to the action. United 45 minutes away from the last 16.

0-2

HT Brodarac 0-2 United

Indy Boonen and our friend own goal give United a good half time lead.

44 mins: Hamilton booked

Now a ridiculously soft yellow for Hamilton.

42 mins: Another poor challenge

Ethan Hamilton the victim of another poor challenge from Brodarac. The referee really needs to get a grip of this.

0-2

35 mins: Chance Gomes!

So close to a third! Angel Gomes does really well to beat two defenders and wriggle into the box but his effort is saved by the keeper.

33 mins: Chance Brodarac!

A decent effort flies over the bar.

0-2

United go two up

Another element of fortune but United won’t care. Warren will not be credited with that, clear deflection. But he did very well and showed great composure to rescue a corner that drifted too far wide.

GOAL!

United have a second! Tyrell Warren claims but that’s an own goal.

Either way... 0-2!

Offside?

Brodarac desperate for the flag to be raised for the goal but it stands.

More on Boonen's goal

The keeper will not want to see that again. Boonen under considerable pressure from the defence unleashes a low, weak shot that the keeper gets a hand to but it dribbles into the net.

0-1!

GOAL! Boonen!

Indy Boonen gives United the lead!

7 mins: Rough treatment

Two elbows to the head is the count so far and now Angel Gomes has been felled. Ro-Shaun Williams rightly over to the ref to complain.

0-0

Chong absence part II

The state of the pitch, to use the old cliche, could be a leveller here. Chong rightly protected.

Kick off

And off we go!

Minute's silence

A minute’s silence to honour the victims of the Munich Air Disaster ahead of kick off.

Players are out

United in red, Brodarac in white. The coin toss overseen by skipper Ro-Shaun Williams.

Munich remembered

Tahith Chong's absence explained

Where is Tahith Chong, I hear you ask?

The Dutch winger has had two impressive performances for the u23s now - the latest against Derby on Sunday.

He could have been promoted to the u23s full time but this is a prestigious competition as Angel Gomes’ involvement proves.

The United website states that he is being protected after the knee injury that sidelined him for 10 months.

United team news

Subs: Thompson, Kenyon, Dunne, B. Williams, Laird, Levitt, Bughail-Mellor

u19s in European action

United u19s take on Brodarac in the UEFA Youth League play-off. It is poignant that the youngsters should be in Belgrade this week, and they have participated in some events to remember the 60th anniversary of Munich.

But there is also a football match to be played and won.

A place in the last 16 is the reward.
