ARCHDALE — Randolph Community College (RCC) announced that Joel McClosky, co-owner of Four Saints Brewing Co. in Asheboro, and Web Grubb, former RCC Small Business Center director who currently serves as marketing and advertising director for Reidsville Nissan, will present “How Your Business can be a Community-Based Business and How that can Help Your Bottom Line.” This seminar, free to the small business community, will be held today, noon-1:30 p.m., at the RCC Archdale Center. Southern States elects new board chairman
RICHMOND, Va. — Southern States Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest farmer-owned co-ops, announced that Curry Roberts has been elected chairman of its board of directors. Roberts was elected chairman at the board’s January meeting. A member of the Southern States board of directors since 1992, Roberts has served as the board’s vice chairman since 2013. He succeeds Raleigh Ward, who reached his term limit after serving as the board’s chairman for the last four years. Roberts is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

Duke Energy renews contract with N.C. biomass energy producer
CHARLOTTE — Duke Energy announced it has renewed a long-term power purchase agreement with a 50-megawatt biomass facility in North Carolina, continuing the company’s pursuit to diversify its electricity mix with biomass and alternative energy. Craven County Wood Energy (CCWE) in New Bern is a 24-hour-a-day baseload plant that supplies enough power annually for more than 30,000 homes. The facility uses mainly wood waste, with 25 percent poultry (turkey) waste to generate electricity.
