HARLINGEN — The City of Harlingen will dedicate its hiking/biking trail on 25th Street to the late Meg Jorn, the well-known architect and marathoner who was killed in a traffic accident in September.

The Meg Jorn Trail dedication will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. at 25th Street and Harrison Avenue. A 5K run/walk will follow the dedication ceremony and the unveiling of a monument to Jorn.

“She was a big-time runner, and she ran in several marathons, actually over 20 marathons, including the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon,” said Javier Mendez, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

“She ran a lot and she also cycled, she was a cyclist,” Mendez said.

“So that’s why we felt the trail was more appropriate to dedicate to her,” he added. “She also served on many boards with the city, planning and zoning, the Mayor’s Wellness Committee and she was also a member of the Harlingen Wellness Coalition.”

The event is free and the first 300 to register at Footworks Harlingen will receive a T-shirt, Mendez said.

Jorn, a Massachusetts native, was president of Megamorphosis Inc., a well-known architectural and interior design firm based in Harlingen.

The firm has been involved in some of the most high-profile projects in the region, including the renovation of The Reese Hotel in downtown Harlingen, the Harlingen school district’s new Performing Arts Center, Harlingen’s new west side fire station and the Saint Anthony Parish Community Center.
