The 105th Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival begins Wednesday, Feb. 7, and the city of Steamboat Springs will be closing several roads and trails in preparation for hosting the festivities.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, a one-lane closure will occur on Lincoln Avenue as city crews haul and set up snow sculpture frames over a six- to eight-hour period. City snowmaking crews have spent the past few weeks making snow specifically for Winter Carnival Street Events.

Lincoln Avenue from Fifth to 11th streets will be closed at 2 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 for the Street Events. During the closure, traffic will detour along Oak Street. At the conclusion of the Street Events, crews will plow the snow to the parking lanes and reopen Lincoln Avenue.

On Sunday, Feb. 11 Lincoln closure takes effect at 4 a.m. with detours onto Oak Street. In addition, Yampa Street will be closed Sunday morning for parade staging. With the Diamond Hitch Parade taking place after the Street Events, these closures will remain in effect until about 2 p.m.

At the conclusion of the parade, city crews will push snow to the side of Lincoln for removal Monday, Feb. 12 when the last closure goes into place at 2 a.m.

All trails that access Emerald Mountain including Blackmere Trail will be closed for public safety from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 as crews set up and launch fireworks for the Night Extravaganza. Additional trail closures may be required before Feb. 10, and signage will be posted at all trailheads.

Steamboat Springs Arts Council seeks board members

The Steamboat Springs Arts Council is currently accepting applications for board membership. The nonprofit group's mission is to promote arts and culture in the Yampa Valley through events, programming, and advocacy. The SSAC board is a hard-working, dedicated, arts-loving group. Steamboat Institute hosts talk on Trump's foreign policy

Professor Robert Kaufman will present "Two Provisional Cheers for Trump's Foreign Policy" from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at the Chief Theater. Kaufman is the 2017-18 visiting scholar in conservative thought and policy at University of Colorado Boulder. Following his presentation, Kaufman will be signing copies of his latest book, "Dangerous Doctrine: How Obama's Grand Strategy Weakened America." Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a cash bar will be available. The talk, which is sponsored by The Steamboat Institute as part of its Campus Liberty Tour, is free and open to the public. Free cardiovascular screenings offered on Valentine's Day          

In recognition of American Heart Month, Northwest Colorado Health is offering free drop-in cardiovascular screenings 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb 14 at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101. Screenings include blood pressure and blood glucose checks, cholesterol panel, BMI and information about how to reduce the risk of heart disease based on screening results. NCCHP offers mental health first aid class for Spanish speakers

Northwest Colorado Community Health Partnership is offering a mental health first aid class in Spanish from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4 in room #210 in the Academic Building at Colorado Mountain College Steamboat Springs. Anthony Bourdain food waste film screens at library

Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council present a free screening of "Wasted!," a new documentary film that aims to change the way people buy, cook, recycle and eat food, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 in Library Hall. Through the eyes of chefs Anthony Bourdain, Dan Barber, Massimo Bottura and Danny Bowien, viewers will see how the world's most influential chefs make the most of every kind of food, transforming what most people consider scraps into incredible dishes that create a more secure food system.

Website building workshop for authors at the library

Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Steamboat Springs Writers Group present a "How to Build Your Author's Website" workshop with local writer Dagny McKinley on Saturday, Feb. 17. McKinley leads this session for authors from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Library Conference Room, a program which she originally developed for the 2017 Women Writing the West conference. During this two-hour workshop, McKinley shares important step-by-step help for authors about how to get started and make your personal author website live. Participants will receive a copy of the presentation for future reference after the session. This class limited to 16 participants and the cost is $25.
