Warning: Contains big, sob-filled spoilers for all three seasons of Lovesick.

I'd be lying if I said I made it through all three seasons of Lovesick without at least a prickle in my eyes.

The show occupies that hard-to-perfect sweet spot between consistently funny and — every now and then — emotionally crushing. It's like BoJack Horseman, or that episode of Futurama where Fry's dog dies.

But hey, what's the point in sadness unless we can relieve the pain again and again, right?

From Luke's failed proposal attempt to Evie and Dylan's never-endingly tragic romance, here are some of the many moments Lovesick really grabbed us by the tear-ducts...

1. When Luke and Dylan tried to track down Phoebe.

We don't know much about Phoebe at the beginning of her episode. She's on Dylan's list and she hasn't been returning his calls, but that's about it. After her mum breaks the news of her death to Luke and Dylan while they sit in shell-shocked silence on the sofa, though, it's clear the episode is going to be a sad one.

The subsequent backstory, in which it becomes obvious exactly how much Phoebe meant to Luke — and how he swallowed his feelings for her to protect his friendship with Dylan — makes the final return to her memorialised bedroom all the more poignant.

2. When Luke decided to say what Dylan couldn't.

You've really got to love Luke's character. At the start of the show he comes across as an emotionally-dead serial womaniser, but it's not long before his character gets fleshed out. The final scene of the first series is one of his first truly heroic moments: he knows that Dylan will try to do what he thinks is the right thing, so he decides to take matters into his own hands.

What makes the scene even more emotional is that we know when he says, "It'll be the biggest regret of his life", he's thinking of himself. And what he didn't say to Phoebe.

3. When Dylan swallowed his feelings.

While Luke may have that brash, say-it-how-it-is streak in him, Dylan can be rage-inducingly self-sabotaging at times.

The first episode of the second series, where he undoes all Luke's good work by lying about how he really feels, is super frustrating. But what he says is also incredibly sweet.

"You asked me what I want, and I want to be your best man," Dylan tells Evie. "I want to walk you up the aisle and I want you to be happy for the rest of your life. That matters to me."

4. Luke's girlfriend breaking up with him.

In a lot of ways, Luke is the most tragic character in Lovesick. And it's in the second series that he really comes into his own.

The thing is, university Luke is a totally different person to the present-day, different-woman-every-night guy who jokes and blags his way through every situation.

"Dyl's like me," says university Luke, introducing Dylan and Evie at a house party six years in the past. "Dyl's a one woman guy."

The woman he's referring to — Jo — arrives at the party not long after, only to break up with Luke mid-way through what turns out to be a proposal attempt, and make it clear that her feelings for him are a million miles away from his feelings for her.

The post-party montage, in which a sleeper rolls onto the slideshow remote and we see what Luke had planned for his next slide, makes the situation even more heart-wrenching.

5. And the way he deals with the emotional fallout.

Luke is the perfect example of a man who represses his emotions rather than dealing with them. He wears bravado like armour.

Jo breaking up with him is the start of everything we've seen from him in the show up until this point. It's the start of a cycle he's still trying to break out of six years after university.

Rather than speaking to Dylan and Evie about the breakup, Luke sleeps with a random girl and then shuts himself in the bathroom to cry silently into a towel. It's a brief, understated moment that goes a long way to showing just how damaged he is — and will be for years to come — by what's happened.

6. Evie's whisky tasting.

Like much of Dylan and Evie's relationship, this one isn't an out-and-out tear-jerker; it's far more subtle than that.

The episode above starts with a whisky-tasting session for Evie's upcoming wedding, which bookends some memories of a drunken event from two-and-a-half years before — an awards ceremony at which Evie kissed Dylan.

The most poignant moment occurs right at the end, though, when Evie asks her fiancée to taste the whisky she's chosen. And when he asks he what the taste makes her think of, it's the memory of Dylan she sees in her mind.

7. Luke bumping into Jo again.

As Luke struggles to work through his feelings in therapy, we get a flashback to another nail in his emotional coffin: a random meeting with his ex-girlfriend Jo, which goes just as badly as we're expecting it to.

As she's leaving, her advice to him about calling the girl Luke mentions — not knowing that Phoebe is dead — adds yet another sting. As does Luke's decision to smile and nod rather than explaining it.

8. The ending of the second series.

Predictably, Lovesick stores up the biggest of its many weep-fests for the series finales. The messy end to series two, in which shots of Dylan saying he loves Abigail are spliced with Evie admitting to Luke she's left her fiancée for Dylan, is the perfect example of this.

9. Abigail breaking up with Dylan.

"Bittersweet" would probably be the best way to describe Lovesick. Whenever someone else is happy, someone else is struggling. Moments of joy are shadowed by moments of heartache. The point at which Dylan and Evie finally get together in series three is like this; we can't be truly happy for them at this stage, because Abigail — who has literally done nothing but be an awesome person from minute one — is an unwitting victim of them taking such a long time to be honest with themselves.

10. Angus telling the others that Holly has left him.

Oh, Angus.

He really comes into his own in series three, and Joshua McGuire's acting in the scene above is impeccable. There's something about the way his typically upbeat, cheery nature slowly crumbles away as he tells the others what happened with Holly that really tugs at the heart strings.

11. Jonesy's blunt response to Luke finally working up the courage to say he loves her...

After he's been on a such a long, difficult journey, we're really rooting for Luke to finally find happiness with Jonesy. They have that same, peas-in-a-pod bond that Luke and Phoebe seemed to have in series one.

When he finally builds up the courage to say something to her, though, it initially seems as though he's misread the situation in the most tragic way possible.

12. ...And then the moment she decides to give things a go.

Okay, finally a moment that's tear-inducing in a good way. I absolutely wasn't expecting series three to end happily for Luke, so when Jonesy abruptly barges into his room at the end of the final episode — even though there's still some faint doubt in her voice — it's a welcome surprise.

13. Angus' final, heartbreaking line from series three.

All the characters in Lovesick are likeable, so it's never nice to see any of them upset. But seeing the ever-adorable Angus upset is particularly heart-wrenching — sort of like watching someone being mean to a puppy.

His final line in series 3, as he sits around a table with his former university classmates and discusses what he wants from life, is brutal in its simple honesty.

14. Evie and Dylan finally finding happiness?!?

Like with Luke and Jonesy, I wasn't expecting Evie and Dylan's series three storyline to have a happy ending. But Lovesick is nothing if not unpredictable. Dylan smiling at his reflection in the window before hugging Evie in bed is sweet, and all the more emotional because it's been such a long time coming.

Still, if the show does get another series, I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to guess that more moments of heartache are waiting just around the corner...

Seasons 1-3 of Lovesick are available now on Netflix.
