Man arrested for cheating telco of smartphones via false applications for phone plans

SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old man has been arrested over his alleged involvement in a series of cheating cases involving smartphones.

In a news release on Wednesday (Feb 7), the police said a telco reported that a man had submitted forged applications for high value mobile phone service plans to get phones for free.

In total, he pocketed five smartphones worth $5,000.

Officers from Tanglin Police Division conducted extensive investigations and arrested the suspect on Wednesday in Bukit Batok West Avenue 5.

Police said he will be charged with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

The maximum punishment for the offence is up to 10 years' jail and a fine.
