SALINA — The Newton middle schools wrestling team claimed a pair of dual meet wins Tuesday at Salina Lakewood.
Newton downed Salina Lakewood 54-40 and Salina South 66-33.
Newton is 4-2-1 and competes Tuesday in a double dual at Salina South.

HILLSBORO — Berean Academy basketball player Ashtyn Wiebe signed a letter of intent to play for Tabor College beginning with the 2018-19 season.
Wiebe is a multi-year All-Heart of America League first-team selection.
Wiebe helped lead the Warriors to a Class 2A state berth in 2017.
Halstead lifter
wins title
GODDARD — Halstead High School Caileen Walters won the girls power lifting title at a meet School in Goddard.
Walters won the 156 pound weight class.
She swept the bench, squat and clean lift for the overall title. She also won the Roger Robben award for outstanding lifter.
Golden Gloves
tourney slated
WICHITA — The Kansas State Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament will be held Feb. 24 at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, 2400 Opportunity Drive, in Wichita.
The meet draws amateur boxers ages 18 to 40 from around the state, west of U.S. 75.
Winners in the open division in each weight class will advance to the Kansas-Oklahoma regional tournament March 31 at the Drury Hotel in Wichita.
Regional winners advance to the National Golden Gloves Championships May 14 to 19 in Omaha, Neb.

Wingnuts sign
four players
WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts signed four pitchers, including three rookies, to the training camp roster for the upcoming season.
Signed were Felix Carvallo, Peter Irwin, Taylor Hoesen and Josh Lang. Irwin, Hoesen and Lang are all rookies.
Carvallo is a six-year pro, who spent five seasons in the Texas Rangers farm system, reaching as high as Class A Advanced. He also played six seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Lifetime, he is 25-12 with a 3.67 earned-run-average. He has 10 saves and 294 strikeouts against 116 walks in 299 innings pitched.
Irwin played two seasons at Lewis and Clark State in Idaho, where he was 6-2 with a 3.18 ERA with 57 strikeouts and 29 walks in 65 innings. He helped lead Lewis and Clark State to an NAIA title in 2015 and 2016. He pitched last summer with the Everett Merchants, taking second at the National Baseball Congress World Series.
Hoesen played at Trinity University in San Antonio, where he was 1-0 in 11 games over three seasons with a 9.00 ERA, seven strikeouts and 10 walks. Trinity won the NCAA Division III National Championships in 2016.
Lang played two seasons at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Wash. In 11 games, Lang went 1-2 with an 8.86 ERA. Lang had 16 strikeouts and 14 walks in 21.1 innings.
Wichita now has seven players under contract for the upcoming training camp. The American Association allows up to 28 players on the training camp roster. Training camp opens May 6.
Thunder makes
roster moves
WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder activated forward Mark MacMillan from bereavement leave.
Wichita sent Colin Martin to the Rapid City Rush for cash considerations. Forward Jake Trask has been waived.
• Dylan Stevenson has been named to the ECHL Fantasy Team, while Shane Starrett has been named a Golden Goalie participant in a recent league promotion. One player from each team has been named to the Fantasy Team and one goalie to the Golden Goalie team via a vote of the fans.
• The Wichita Police vs. Fire game will be 5 p.m. Feb. 17 at INTRUST Bank Arena preceding the Thunder game against Rapid City. Tickets for the Thunder game are good for both games.
