The two Maltese-mix dogs turned over by Perris torture defendants David and Louise Turpin have been adopted by a Perris family, the city said.
While 12 of the 13 Turpin children were described by Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin as so malnourished that their physical and mental development were impaired, the dogs were described as well-fed and healthy by Perris senior animal control officer Christina Avila.
Animal Control received two applications to adopt the 1-year-old females, city spokesman Joe Vargo said. The city held a raffle and inspected the home before handing over the dogs Monday, Feb. 5. The family requested anonymity because of the extensive media coverage, Vargo said.
“We are pleased to know the two dogs will go to a home where they will be well treated and loved,” Vargo said in an email.
Perris also announced that the GoFundMe fundraiser for the children under the title “Perris Victims of Neglect Fund” had far exceeded its goal of $10,000. The fund stood at $29,460 as of Tuesday, and the city has announced plans to donate $10,000 more.
“The community response has been fantastic,” said Mayor Michael Vargas in a news release. “It shows that Perris is a caring community.”
David Allen Turpin, 56, and Louise Ann Turpin, 49, have each been charged with 12 counts of torture, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, six counts of child abuse and 12 counts of false imprisonment. The Turpins’ 2-year-old, Hestrin said, was treated well.
David Turpin has additionally been charged with one count of committing a lewd act by force or fear on a child under 14. Hestrin said he inappropriately touched a female minor.
The Turpins have pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The Turpins remain jailed in lieu of $12 million bail each. They are due back in court Feb. 23 for a routine hearing.
