Jolie Griffin

Jolie Griffin, 61, passed away on January 29, 2018, at the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center after a short illness. Her memorial will be held on Saturday, February 17, at 11:00 at the United Church of Christ. Jolie was born on November 6, 1956, in Ravenna, Ohio to James Joseph Griffin and Betty Scott Griffin. She was a lover of music, hockey, especially the Red Wings, reading, history, and politics. She could carry on a conversation regarding most any historical topic extremely easily. Because of her many interests and talents, she traveled widely and held a variety of jobs. She graduated from Kent State University with a Masters in Journalism in May, 1980. Soon after she took her first newspaper job and worked as an award-winning reporter in various cities from 1980-2000. She later taught fifth grade in the Bronx and then moved onto teaching French in Tuckahoe, New York. From there, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts and worked as an adult ESL instructor. Jolie then moved to Dalian, China and taught English there for one year. She ended her career in Liberal, Kansas as a STEM transfer coordinator at Seward Community College. In 2014, she moved back to Kent and reconnected with many of her childhood and high school friends. She will be deeply missed by those many friends whose lives she touched. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Griffin Freeman. She is survived by her brother, Robert Scott Griffin (Normalah) and brother-in-law, Mark Freeman, and close friends, Laura Marlow, Vickie Tackett Wyatt, Joan Moore Marvin, and Donna Hess.
