Crutchfield Elementary School entered into a lockdown Tuesday afternoon after being advised of a law enforcement situation near the campus, but it was lifted shortly before 1:45 p.m.
“We went into lockdown under police advisement,” Director of Communications Emily Parks said. “It was a police matter, it wasn’t anything with our schools.”
Sherman Police Department Assistant Chief Bob Fair said police were trying to serve a warrant in the 1900 block of Deborah Street and asked that the school be put on lockdown as a safety precaution. He said there was never any danger to anyone at the school.
“They were looking for the guy and there was a big pit(bull) in the backyard,” Fair said.
He said the officers serving the warrant waited for animal control to come to deal with the dog so officers could search for the suspect. Police arrived on the scene at 11:16 a.m. and left at 2:53 p.m. They did not locate the man they were hunting and that case continues.
School officials placed the campus under lockdown at 1:17 p.m. and posted on the Crutchfield Elementary Facebook page that all students and staff members were safe.
“We are working closely with the Sherman PD to monitor the situation,” the statement read. “Due to this activity please avoid the area. We ask that parents do not come to the campus. Police will notify campus administration of the all clear and we will resume normal activities. We will notify parents of updates or changes via email and phone calls.”
At 1:42 p.m., school officials posted a new message that the lockdown had been lifted and sent thanks to the Sherman Police Department.
