There's always plenty happening in and around Newcastle as the city is known as a party hot-spot with lots of choice for things to do no matter what night of the week it is - and we're not even talking about the range of bars and restaurants to pick from.

So, that means there's always guaranteed to be something to suit all tastes.

We regularly draw up a list of ideas of where to go and what to see if you find yourself at a bit of a loose end and our current top five suggestions for this weekend has something - hopefully - for everyone.

While there's a focus on music, it's a mixed bag with swing, opera and seventies pop and we've added a pick of sparkling comedy and sci-fi dram ato the mix too.

On Friday, the popular swing singer will be the star of the Low Fell club’s second Cutting Hedge event night.

Billed as the “King of Swing”, Newcastle-born Isaacs will be setting a sophisticated tone for an evening of ‘Swing Fever’.

He’ll be paying tribute to the Rat Pack era with his own take on the swing classics plus plenty of his trademark sax solos and tongue-in-cheek humour.

Doors will open at 7pm. For tickets book here.

The trio described as the “Rat Pack of Opera” will take to the stage on Thursday night with Newcastle-based choir Ravenswood Singers.

They have teamed up for a UK tour From Venice To Vegas, fresh from the choir’s recent classical chart-topper Who is He? in aid of The Salvation Army.

The mixed adult choir has performed at St James’ Park and at Durham Cathedral - where they sang Nessun Dorma at Sir Bobby Robson’ memorial service - while the tenors have appeared alongside the likes of Sting, Lionel Richie and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

So it promises a good combo. See the results at 7.30pm.

The South Shields theatre will be hosting a music nostalgia-fest on Friday with a night of classic 70s hits starting at 7.30pm.

Led by “Catsuit Wondergirl” Janey Bombshell, the show’s entertainers will blast back to the very peak of pop.

Audiences can expect the explosive power of Queen, ELO and The Carpenters; the “pin-up pop” of The Osmonds, David Essex and David Cassidy; “foot-stompin’ glam rock” of Sweet, Mud and T.Rex; the classic likes of Saturday Night Fever and Grease, and then UK winner Eurovision hits.

Add a dollop of humour to all that and what’s not to like?

The Newcastle theatre’s production of H.G. Wells’ classic revives the scary scenario of invisible missiles with an invading force of Martians hurtling through space en route to Earth.

This new adaptation by Laura Lindow, set in the North East, charts the fortunes of a band of survivors as they battle against the devastation and destruction of their planet by the unseen enemy.

The inventive re-telling of a sci-fi classic runs at the theatre until Saturday.
