Prosecutors say Janelle Monroy was a willing partner as her husband killed two Northern California sheriff's deputies in 2014.

But defense attorney Peter Kmeto tells jurors in closing arguments Wednesday that Monroy was under duress and feared Luis Bracamontes would kill her if she didn't help him.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Monroy cried quietly as prosecutors disputed her defense.

She was seen arm-in-arm with her husband shortly before he killed Sacramento County sheriff's Deputy Danny Oliver. Hours later he killed Placer County sheriff's Detective Michael Davis Jr.

She faces life in prison if convicted. Closing arguments in Bracamontes' trial are expected Thursday.

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty if he is convicted. He has made frequent outbursts saying he should have killed more deputies.
