Colombia's ICT ministry Mintic has committed to funding the country’s free public Wi-Fi zones for the rest of 2018 before handing over responsibility to municipal governments starting in 2019. In a statement the ministry said the country’s 1,029 public Wi-Fi zones will continue operating for free even after presidential elections in May and it’s still targeting 1,700 zones in 650 departments throughout the country by the end of the year.

Each hotspot covers an area of around 7,800 square meters and provides free internet access to at least 200 simultaneous users. Over 4.7 million users throughout the country have connected to the hotspots since launch, said Mintic.
