Former magistrate court employee accused of embezzlement
A former employee of the Cherokee County Magistrate’s Office has been charged by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division with embezzlement of public funds.
Angela Gregg Mabry, of White Oak Road, is accused in an arrest warrant filed by SLED Agent Adam Slizewski. The alleged embezzlement occurred between July 1, 2016, and May 30, 2017.
In the arrest warrant, the SLED agent alleges: “To wit: in her position at the magistrate’s office, the defendant was entrusted with processing payments and receiving monies on behalf of the magistrate’s office. The defendant was also entrusted with collecting money from payments processed by other clerks and depositing the money to the bank. An audit was conducted that revealed discrepancies with the amount of money received by the defendant, and the amount actually deposited into the magistrate’s office bank account. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the defendant received and fraudulently documented/processed over $10,000 in transactions of public funds, thus depriving Cherokee County.”
A copy of the warrant, obtained from SLED, shows it was served Wednesday. The warrant was signed by Circuit Court Judge Keith Kelly.
Mabry was at the Cherokee County Detention Center on Wednesday afternoon and has not yet had a bond hearing, a jail official confirmed.
Cherokee County officials had confirmed to The Gaffney Ledger last June that SLED was called in to investigate after a periodic review of the magistrate court’s bank statements turned up irregularities.
