Man says he robbed 5 banks, tried for a 6th during robbery spree

A Passaic County man on Tuesday admitted robbing five banks and trying to rob a sixth as part of a month-long crime spree two years ago, federal prosecutors said.

Quentin Morales, 27, of Passaic, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan in Trenton to three counts of bank robbery, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said, Morales admitted robbing Wells Fargo branches in Kearny, Kenilworth, Linden, Clifton and Union, as well as attempting to rob a Capital One branch in Elizabeth.

Prosecutors said that Morales would give bank tellers notes demanding cash, and in at least two instances said he had a gun and urged tellers to hurry.

During the robbery spree, which began on June 25, 2016, and ended with his arrest that Aug. 2 by members of the State Parole Board, Morales was one of the bank robbers most wanted by the FBI's Newark Division, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the charges to which Morales pleaded guilty each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing has been scheduled for May 14, 2018.
