Voters have approved $25.5 million in bonds for Iowa Central Community College to finance building projects at the college's campuses across the state.
More than 67 percent of voters approved the bond issue Tuesday for building improvements and construction at campuses in Eagle Grove, Fort Dodge, Storm Lake and Webster City, the Messenger reported .
The largest portion of the bond, $6 million, will build a student success center on the Fort Dodge campus to house a variety of student services that are currently scattered across campus. It will put veteran services, enrollment services, student advising, financial aid, counseling, health care, career services, distance learning and the early intervention support program under one roof.
About $3 million will be directed toward safety improvements at all campuses, and $2.5 million will be set aside for a new industrial training facility in Storm Lake.
"We're going to get rolling on these projects, big time," said Dan Kinney, the college's president.
Kinney said property taxes will pay off the debt. For a property owner with a house assessed at $100,000, he said that retiring the debt will cost about $12 a year.
Kinney said the bond issue is about keeping young people in the area by investing in education. He said the college will begin consulting with architects to finalize the building projects and working with financial consultants to borrow the money.
