The Florida Department of Health barred two nurses from treating patients after allegedly stealing the medication and checkbook from patients.
The agency placed on an emergency restriction on the licenses of Tristan C. White, a certified nursing assistant, and Maggie Diana Da Silva, a registered nurse.
White was employed at the assisted-living facility Seaside Health and Rehabilitation in Daytona Beach last summer. She cashed checks from a 70-year-old patient’s checkbook totaling $1,300 using a forged signature, according to the health department. White was fired on July 24.
While employed at Bishop’s Glenn Retirement Center in Holly Hill, White was assigned to work for a 98-year-old patient. Sometime between October and November 2017, she stole the patient’s checkbook and wrote $350 worth of checks to herself using a forged signature, the agency said.
White, a resident of Daytona Beach, admitted to the crime and was terminated on Nov. 9. Police arrested and charged her with exploiting the elderly, fraud and grand theft. The cases are still pending in Volusia County Circuit Court.
Da Silva was employed at Southern Breeze Assisted Living Facility in Palm Coast last September. A colleague saw her remove as many as six tablets of Klonopin, a sedative used to treat anxiety and seizures, from a patient’s medication supply.
Da Silva took one pill and pocketed the rest. The Palm Coast woman later told staff that she was “going through a dark tunnel” because of her mother’s death and that she’d run out of her own prescription for Klonopin, according to the health department. She also asked that they not tell anyone.
When interviewed by a health department investigator, Da Silva admitted to taking the drugs. She was barred from working as a nurse, but it’s unclear if criminal charges were ever filed.
