COLCHESTER — In its first resolution of the year, the council voted Monday night to approve a five-year trash removal and recycling contract with Jackson Disposal.
The vote came after a related action to waive competitive bidding requirements on the trash removal and recycling contract passed with all ayes. During discussion on the issue, Mayor Danny Bice commented that he was happy with the service they have.
The contract will begin July 1, 2018 and will end June 30, 2023.
Also on Monday, the city approved a $50 membership in the Illinois Municipal Treasurer’s Association for Treasurer Wanda Utter. Membership in the association will provide training opportunities and support for Utter in her role as Treasurer.
Discussion on whether to allow a monthly flea market in the city park stalled after about 15 minutes without resolution. Concerns raised during discussion included the high cost of portable toilets ($200-$250/month), likely damage to the park grass, the need to pick up trash following each event, and the need for the city or vendors to provide insurance.
The police committee meets on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m., with the street and alley and water and sewer committees meeting at 7 p.m. The committee of the whole meets on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The next regular meeting is March 5.
