It might not be "Jesus on a piece of toast" - but one Kiwi woman has stumbled across a map of New Zealand in the form of water drops on her sink on Waitangi Day.

Hamilton woman Chantelle Pettigrew said she was brushing her teeth before bed when she turned the tap on.

Seconds later a map the shape of New Zealand in the sink was staring back at her.

"I thought 'wow that looks like New Zealand', then I had a second glance over and thought, 'yeah, that's definitely New Zealand'.

"So I ran off and got my phone, snapped a photo and within a matter of seconds it merged into a big drop," she told the Herald.

"The South Island dripped down into Stewart Island and they dripped down into the sink and that's it. And the North Island lost its shape a bit after that too."

After taking the photo Pettigrew pondered what to do with the image before sharing it with friends on social media.

She told the Herald it was a freak occurrence and was lucky she managed to snap the image in time.

"I was just lucky in the space of me running out of the bathroom to grab my phone that the shape lasted that long before it broke away.

"It was just so uncanny that it looked like New Zealand."

Pettigrew wasn't the only one who found the New Zealand waterdrop intriguing with a number of friends admitting the photo is amusing.

While Pettigrew knows not everyone will see the funny side, she wanted to share the moment in an attempt to brighten up peoples day.

"Friends have cracked up. They think it's hard case. Just because it was Waitangi day as well otherwise wouldn't have thought much of it but we thought it was pretty funny.

"I thought I would get mocked about it but I thought it is actually quite funny and if other people can get a laugh out of it then it's all good."

Could Pettigrew's chance water map of New Zealand be a sign of luck?

She isn't so sure.

"I don't know. I wish it were. Maybe if it was a dollar sign it would have been better.

"Maybe it's a sign I'll have a good year. Let's hope!"
