Ericsson launches IoT hackaton programme with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Xpand

Ericsson and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in partnership with Axiata Business Services under the brand Xpand, partnered to launch the 'Hack for Good' mobile IoT hackathon in Malaysia. The hackathon aims to unleash the potential of IoT to accelerate Technology for Good and covers the complete ecosystem from device, connectivity, cloud platform and mobile applications. Participants can win MYR 20,000 and can also get an opportunity to join Ericsson Garage’s 'Incubation Program.'

The Hackathon will allow students and professionals to create IoT prototype products covering various themes: IoT Saves Lives, IoT Sustains Water, Energy and Utilities, IoT Transforms Road Transportation, IoT Modernises Agriculture.

The hackathon is open to University and tertiary education students from all private and public institutions in Malaysia as well as professional developers, programmers, designers, engineers and technopreneurs.

The top 10 ideas submitted in the programme's call for ideas stage will be shortlisted to participate in the hackathon. The participants will then have a month of hacking time to develop their prototype with the help of industry mentors. After one month of hacking, the participants will present their prototypes at the Hackathon Final that will be held at Innovation Centre for 5G, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur on 11 April.

A similar hackathon was launched by AT&T in 2017 in cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
