APOCALYPSE: NASA's probe OSIRIS-REx is approaching potentially devastating asteroid Bennu

Spaceship OSIRIS-REx has entered the final part of its journey to the gigantic space rock Bennu.

The doom bringer asteroid is thought to be four billion years old and is described as an “ancient relic from an early solar system”.

World-ending devastation would occur if Bennu collided with Earth, as the space rock weighs 60 million tons, travels at 62,000mph, and is 500 metres across.

Bennu’s impact would be the equivalent for three billion tons of TNT, an event comparable to that which wiped out the dinosaurs.

NASA estimates it could impact Earth between 2175 and 2196 – but the spaceship's main mission is to probe for evidence of alien life.

“OSIRIS-REx has been in flight for about 16 months now”

Professor Dante Lauretta

Scientists believe Bennu could be an intergalactic life-giver and is thought to be loaded with materials that could be the building blocks for life on Earth.

And the 1.7 ton OSIRIS-REx ship is equipped with one of the most advanced sets of scanning equipment ever launched into space to help piece together the rock’s mysteries.

Samples will be collected by the spaceship which will then be flown back to Earth for study by NASA.

ASTEROID: Space rock impacts are feared to be the most deadly threat to Earth

Professor Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx’s principal investigator, said at at briefing last month the spacecraft is performing well as makes its final approach.

He said: "OSIRIS-REx has been in flight for about 16 months now. We’ve had a very productive outbound cruise so far.”

The solar-powered ship will enter orbit with Bennu in August, and will return to Earth with its precious samples by 2023.

The NASA scientist said: “The team is very excited and very ready for Bennu, and to begin the science campaign for this mission.”

Previously, the professor warned Bennu "may be destined to cause immense suffering and death” and added “we estimate the chance of impact at about one in 2,700”.

OSIRIS-REx will extend its robotic arm in 2020 in a bid to scoop up a sample from the asteroid.

Also this week, NASA also revealed the dead IMAGE probe has come back to life after being missing for more than 13-years.

NASA estimates it could impact Earth between 2175 and 2196 – but the spaceship's main mission is to probe for evidence of alien life.

And the 1.7 ton OSIRIS-REx ship is equipped with one of the most advanced sets of scanning equipment ever launched into space to help piece together the rock’s mysteries.

Samples will be collected by the spaceship which will then be flown back to Earth for study by NASA.

The £750 million mission should be able to assess the threat from Bennu, along with its role – if any – in the development of life.

Asteroid impacts are warned by some scientists to be the bigger threat to life on Earth – with mankind having no defence against them.

Yesterday, privateer space firm Space X launched the Falcon Heavy rocket – the largest spaceship launched since the Saturn V – the craft that put mankind on the moon in 1969.

Yesterday, privateer space firm Space X launched the Falcon Heavy rocket – the largest spaceship launched since the Saturn V – the craft that put mankind on the moon in 1969.
