No one was injured when a tanker carrying a full load of sugar flipped on its side about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in front of Keystone in Burlington.

Denny Robinson, 44, of Burlington escaped injury in the accident, which occurred in the 2800 block of Mount Pleasant Street, said Sgt. Bill Venvertloh, a Burlington police spokesman.

Venvertloh said the semi-tractor trailer is owned by WW Transport, 2860 Mount Pleasant St.

While the accident remains under investigation, Venvertloh said it didn't appear weather conditions played a role in the accident.

Mount Pleasant Street, from West Burlington Avenue to Cottage Grove Avenue, was blocked for about three hours while crews righted the trailer and cleared the scene.

According to area law enforcement officials, there were only a handful of accidents in the related to about four inches of snow that fell in the area late Monday and early Tuesday.

"There has been nothing out of the ordinary given the amount of snow we received," Venvertloh said Tuesday morning. "It's been pretty routine so far."

Lt. Brett Grimshaw, a spokesman for the Des Moines County Sheriff's Department, agreed.

"I think we have (been dispatched) to four or five accidents, but nothing serious," he said. "I haven't heard of any injury accidents in our area."

Not so elsewhere in Iowa. Authorities say seven people have been killed — including two teenage sisters — on Iowa roads as a winter storm swept the state Monday, leading to dozens of crashes and a 50- to 70-car pileup near Ames.

Avery Arneson, 17, and 13-year-old Aiden Arneson, sisters from Decorah, died a two-vehicle crash around 8:30 a.m. Monday on a county road in northeast Iowa. Four other teens were injured and hospitalized in that crash.

In Cedar Rapids, two men died in a crash on Interstate 380. Killed were 24-year-old Jacolby Jesse Burks, of Cedar Rapids, and 21-year-old Devion Martel Luster, of Dixon, Illinois.

One person died and several people were critically injured in the pileup that closed Interstate 35 near Ames.

On I-80, police say a person was killed in a crash east of Grinnell around 1:20 p.m., and another person died and two others were injured at 1:40 p.m. near Durant.

While drivers locally seemed to navigate the inclement weather Monday evening, it appears they will get a second chance with snow ranging from two to four inches that was expected to fall on southeast Iowa late Tuesday evening and early today. Finally, another wave of snow is expected for the weekend.
