Students partake in Somerset ice fishing outting

Jonesville Middle School Adventure Club enjoys afternoon sledding and ice fishing on Lombard Lake in the Somerset State Game Area.

SOMERSET — In the midst of winter in Hillsdale County the Jonesville Middle School Adventure Club is taking advantage of the cold and snowy conditions.

Last month, students enjoyed an afternoon sledding and an afternoon ice fishing on Lombard Lake located in the Somerset State Game Area.

Jonesville Middle School Principal Bryan Playford said about 20 students, parents, staff and volunteers ventured out on the ice for an afternoon of fishing.

The Outdoor Club was started several years ago to get students outside to experience different activities.

While the students were on the ice, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Carter Woodwyk stopped to share his knowledge with students.

Playford said Woodwick was just driving by when he saw the students on the lake.

“He turned it into a learning experience for the students,” Playford said. “It was exciting for the kids.”

While on the ice Woodwyk visited with each of the students giving them some fishing tips.

The student body, which includes members of the Outdoor Adventure Club, will venture to Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort in Cadillac this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The annual overnight trip is separated with the boys going one day and the girls the next.
