Irregularities in MBBS admission of hawker’s son protested

The Jatiya Sammilito Hawkers’ Jote yesterday formed a human chain protesting irregularities in MBBS admission of a hawker’s son at Uttara Adhunik Medical College.

They said newspaper hawker Abdus Salam’s son Shamsuddin Suman secured a total score of 263.25 in the admission test of MBBS course for 2017-2018 and his position was 6961 in the national merit list.

As per the government rule, Suman applied to the Uttara Adhunik Medical College under poor and merit quota, says a statement of the hawkers’ alliance.

He then contacted the college administrative officials, who repeatedly assured him of letting him know the schedule for viva, but he was never informed of the schedule. Rather, the result for the viva was published on January 3 and Suman was not in the list of those selected.

The students who had less scores (261, 257.50 and 257.25) than that of Suman’s were admitted, the statement said.

The hawker leaders demanded Suman’s admission at Uttara Adhunik Medical College or else the authorities would face a movement.

Earlier, guardian of a deprived admission seeker in the college filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the legality of the admission of 57 students in general quota, on “first come first served” basis, violating the government law.

Uttara Adhunik Medical College Principal Dr Akram Hossain could not be reached for comments, despite several phone calls.
