Police officials said that Shehnaz, the girl's mother reportedly confessed before the police that she went inside her house to get the butcher's knife. Akbar Ali, the girl's father told police that for past three months, his daughter had been putting pressure on her family members to accept their relationship and on a few occasions had even threatened to elope with Ankit. This had enraged her family members who had started to harbour hatred towards Ankit.

They had gathered as per the plan to kill Ankit. Shehnaaz came to know that she will go out to meet Ankit. Shehnaaz then called her brother Salim to her house in Raghubir Nagar. It was at the girl's house where her mother, father and maternal uncle decided to “finish the chapter of Ankit for once and for all”, said an investigator.

It was only when Ankit's mother called him on the fateful day to inform that the girl's parents had come to their house. It was then that Ankit called his friends and asked them to come near the Tagore Garden metro station.

“His friends lamented that if they had been there, they could have saved Ankit’s life,” added the police officer.

Ankit’s friend Ashish Duggal said, “Ankit’s family was not aware about his relationship with the girl. Instead they were looking for a girl to get him married.”
