‘Bad-Bad Savitri’ at Shaheed Bhavan

Superstitious beliefs are ruining the mentality of people and this has become a business for few fake so-called ‘babas’. A comedy play that highlights the serious issue of superstitious belief ‘Bad-Bad Savitri’ was brilliantly staged at Shaheed Bhavan auditorium here on Tuesday.

Directed by Satish Mehta, the play marked the second day of 12th Bhopal Rangotsav theatre festival 2018. The play was beautifully presented by the artists of Prayog Rang Samuh, Bhopal.

The play was written by a renowned Marathi writer Ratnakar Matkari. The story revolves around a professor known as Professor Pophle. Professor is a very old man who is a widower. His wide Savitri died years ago and now he was feeling really alone. To overcome his loneliness, he married his student Yamini.

The play begins with introducing the characters. The scene starts from Professor Phophle’s drawing room. Pophle lives with his mother and wife. One day, professor’s friend Dr Mishra pays a visit to him. Along with Dr Mishra enters a new character on stage.

This is none other than the so-called ‘Tantrik Baba’. He roams around professor’s house and realizes that professor would easily belive whatever baba will say. Now taking the advantage of his superstitious beliefs the Tantrik Baba creates an atmosphere of black magic and as a result professor starts to hear the voice of his dead wife Savitri.

After some time Savitri appears before him and the comedy ensues from here when Savitri took up the stage. She makes Yamini and her mother-in-law’s life a living hell. What follows are the situational comedy scenes tiil, the trap of fake baba is broke.

The stage of the play was well created that went with the story concept enhancing the performances on stage. The audience enjoyed the play whole heartedly.
