A judge in Virginia approved a bankruptcy plan that permits struggling retailer Toys R Us to hold going-out-of business sales at about a third of its locations, NorthJersey.com reported Tuesday.
The sales could begin as soon as soon as Wednesday and are expected to last through April 15. Additional information on the sales was expected to be released soon.
About 182 stores, or a third of the Wayne-based company's 880 locations, were originally slated to close under a plan put forth by the company last month, although at least a dozen stores have since been removed from that list. The plan affects Toys R Us and Babies R Us locations.
About 12 of the stores originally slated for closure are in New Jersey, but at least one of them, in Eatontown, will stay in business, according to APP.com.
"The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus," company CEO Dave Brandon stated in a message on the company website last month, when he also announced the going-out-of-business sales.
Toys R Us is another bricks-and-mortar retailer struggling to survive in an era of online shopping. A year ago, the company laid off about 15 percent of the staff at its Wayne headquarters.
