Three get life term for killing freedom fighter in Rangpur

A Rangpur court yesterday sentenced three men to life imprisonment for killing a freedom fighter over land dispute in 2014.

It also fined the convicts -- Abdul Khaleque, 69, his son Rashed Mia, 27, and Liton Mia, 30, of village Madhabpur in Rangpur Sadar upazila -- Tk 25,000 each.

Besides, the court sentenced seven others to six-month imprisonment in the same case. The convicts, Amirul Islam, Azadul Islam, Raihan, Abdul Kuddus, Monju Mia, Md Mahbub, and Md Babu, were also fined Tk 5,000 each.

On July 9, 2014, the accused beat up Sekendar Ali, 58, of the village, when he went to a piece of disputed land for planting paddy seeds. He died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
