Triple talaq, Babri Masjid to be top agenda in 3-day AIMPLB meeting in Hyd

Triple talaq Bill and the Babri Masjid title case before Supreme Court will be on the top of the agenda of the 3-day plenary meeting of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) in Hyderabad starting from Friday.

AIMPLB is the representative body comprising of all the important organisations and top clerics of an estimated 20 crore Indian Muslims.

Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi, who is playing the host of the meeting said that while the deliberations of the Board will be held at the newly built Indoor Stadium at Owaisi Medical College and Hospital in the city, the session will end with a massive public meeting on Sunday evening. About 1000 delegates from all over the country will be attending the session.

The meeting was being held at a crucial juncture when the first attempt by the Narendar Modi Government to pass the Triple Talaq Bill was successful in Lok Sabha but was stalled in Rajya Sabha and the Government was contemplating to bring it once again before the Lok Sabha during the current session of Parliament.

The bill seeks to criminalise the triple talaq and provides for three years imprisonment to the husband who commits it.

“Our stand on the bill is clear. This is not in the interest of Muslim women but a clear and blatant interference with the Shariah”, said Owaisi.

Apart from reiterating its stand against the controversial bill, the Board will also take up the issue of reforms within the community on the method of instant Talaq.

The most significant initiative in this direction will be introduction of a new column in the Nikahnama or the document of marriage under which the Muslim males will have to take a oath that they will not give triple Talaq to his wife which immediately nulls the marriage.

Moulana Khaleel-ur-Rahman Sajjad Nadvi, the spokesman of the Board said that apart from making the changes in the marriage contract document, the Board will also take up a massive social campaign against Talaq, dowry and other social ills. “As most of the divorce cases take place among the less educated people the Board will focus its attention on the rural areas”, he said.

Moulana Syed Wali Rahmani, general secretary of the Board expressed confidence that with once the groom gives an undertaking of  not giving triple Talaq ever, the question of its violation will not arise.
