Elderly man shot dead in Taranaki

An elderly male has been shot dead in South Taranaki and a man charged with his murder.

Emergency services were called to an address in Normanby yesterday about 7pm.

A 78-year-old man was treated for a gunshot wound but died at the scene.

A 68-year-old male has been arrested and charged with murder, Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said.

The dead man's name has not yet been released.

Inquiries were continuing and further charges were likely.

The alleged offender is due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court today.

No one else was being sought in relation to the death.
