University of Minnesota police are on the lookout for a Minnetonka man who allegedly assaulted a U employee near the Mayo Building on the East Bank Monday night.

The victim — a facilities management staff member — asked the alleged assailant, Demario Dontae Eugene Brown, 25, to leave the building before Brown assaulted the 71-year-old victim with a bottle at about 11 p.m. and fled the scene, according to the news release. The victim was taken to the hospital with noncritical injuries.

Brown was scheduled to face charges for second-degree burglary of a government building in Ramsey County court on Monday after he allegedly stole equipment from the Metro Transit Police Department in St. Paul in early December. Authorities arrested Brown and found a Taser, handcuffs, pepper spray, a Metro Transit employee ID and other law enforcement equipment in his possession that were missing from the department, the criminal complaint said.

Brown has been cited nine times for unlawful conduct since September, with eight of those cases currently pending. Most involve traffic violations, along with arrests for third-degree assault, fleeing police and theft. He has been civilly committed for mental illness four times since 2012. According to court records for his civil commitment in 2012, Brown was declared schizophrenic and was said to engage in “grossly disturbed behavior” and exhibits “faulty perception” that poses “a substantial likelihood of causing physical harm.”

The Minnetonka address listed on Brown’s latest criminal complaint is the site of a state-run adult foster care program.

His attorney, public defender Edith Brown, was in court this afternoon. It’s unclear whether Brown appeared for his hearing.

University police and local authorities are investigating the case. Brown described as black male with shoulder length dread locks, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a stocking cap, tan jacket and khaki pants.
