SYCAMORE – Even if a DeKalb man thrice convicted for thievery posts $1,000 bail to be released from DeKalb County jail, he'll likely land back behind bars – just not here.

Michael J. Santiago, 26, of the 100 block of East Lincoln Highway, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and ammunition by a felon without a Firearm Owner's Identification card. If he's convicted of possession of a weapon by a felon, he could face two to five years in prison.

Police found a loaded .45-caliber handgun, two more magazines (one of them loaded), two .22-caliber rounds and a shotgun shell in a safe at the apartment, court records show.

Judge Philip Montgomery said Santiago has three convictions, for burglary, residential burglary and theft, and that six times he has failed to appear in court. Thus, he said bond will stand at the $10,000 listed on Santiago's warrant.

Then he asked why Santiago didn't post the $1,000 he had on him when he was booked – in fact, court records show he had $1,086 on him.

"I've got a no-bond hold in Florida, so I was waiting to see how things played out this afternoon before I posted anything," Santiago answered.

Santiago is due back in court at 9 a.m. March 2.
