OAKLAND — Most Warriors practices end with either Stephen Curry or Kevin Durant trading 3-point baskets. Following Monday’s practice? Completely different story.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr stood around halfcourt and launched five shots. He tossed them all underhanded. And he missed all of them.
“I’m old AF,” the 52-year-old Kerr joked. “I can’t almost do anything I could. I’m hanging on by a thread.”
That’s apparently when happens when a former NBA sharpshooter ages into an NBA coach. But there are some advantages toward aging.
“Probably a better drinker. I handle my liquor a little better,” Kerr said. “I’m able to pair what drink to have with what meal. I didn’t understand that concept back then. Now it’s more subtle. A little wiser.”
So instead of chugging beers at the University of Arizona, Kerr has enjoyed glasses of Pinot Noir at dinner. Quality over quantity.
“Older and wiser, if not quite as physically vibrant, Kerr joked.
Beverage consumption aside, Kerr has also changed in different ways.
“It’s such a different role being a coach,” Kerr said. “As a player, you worry about yourself. As a coach, you worry about everybody else. You’re constantly thinking about what each player needs. That’s what makes it fun. It’s a totally different job.”
