Massillon council OKs contract for Fire Station 3 concept

City Council also gave permission to the Fire Department to seek monetary bids for an aging fire engine.

MONDAY MEETING

KEY ACTION  Approved an ordinance that triggers a contract with SOL Harris/Day Architecture for engineering and architectural design services, which are related to upgrading and expanding Fire Station 3, 955 Wales Road NE.

The contract agreement is for approximately $50,000.

Remodeling the station is likely to start later this year, as a living quarters for firefighters, fitness room and turnout gear area will be added to the rear portion of the structure. Cost to get the station back to serviceable is estimated between $600,000 and $800,000.

Fire Station 3 was shut down in 2012 because it posed a safety hazard to firefighters, as city health inspectors had found peeling paint, mold and flaking asbestos tiles inside. Some interior and asbestos work could start as soon as April.

OTHER ACTION  Gave first reading to an ordinance that would authorize $100,000 to fund legal services already under contract with Tzangas, Plakas and Mannos, the law firm that assisted the city with its case to keep Affinity Medical Center.

A legal settlement was reached Thursday between Massillon and Affinity, in which the city is in line to acquire more than $25 million worth of property and medical equipment with the intention of reopening the site as a medical center.

Specific language involving the deal is still being finalized.

Accepted a $1,000 grant from the Massillon Rotary to benefit the Fire Department, which will use the money to purchase smoke detectors to be passed out to residents as part of an annual program.
Authorized the Fire Department to begin accepting monetary bids for a 1989 Pierce Dash Fire Engine.

UP NEXT  Meets for a work session at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Massillon Government and Justice Center, 1 James Duncan Plaza.
