Being an elected representative will not be a bar on lawyers from practicing in court, ruled an expert sub-committee constituted by Bar Council of India (BCI) on a complaint filed by an advocate alleging conflict of interest in allowing lawyers who become MPs/MLAs to continue their legal work.
The four-member sub-committee is understood to have given a majority opinion of 3:1 with one member being of the view that lawyer MPs/MLAs should be barred from practicing before courts. The committee had submitted its report last month to the BCI. On Sunday, the General Council of BCI met to discuss the report.
BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra said a final view on the findings of the committee will be taken after hearing all parties in this regard.
