An Ashland man was found dead on his bicycle along a rural Ashland riding trail Monday and investigators are trying to determine what led to the crash, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released Monday evening, was found dead with his bicycle on the ground near the Hitt Road Trail about two miles south of Strawberry Lane, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.

He was discovered shortly before 1 p.m. by a hiker on the trail, which is a common backwoods thoroughfare for mountain-biking enthusiasts, sheriff's deputies said.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner's Office will investigate to confirm a cause of death, sheriff's Sgt. Julie Denney said.

Investigators don't know whether the victim died strictly from impact of the crash or whether he had a "medical event" that led to the crash, Denney said.

Denney said she did not know whether the man was a seasoned trail-rider.

Further details were unavailable Monday evening.
