Border Patrol agents near Tucson, Ariz., made an unusual discovery Saturday when they found 10 ounces of heroin packed inside a condom, according to a Customs and Border Protection press release issued Monday afternoon.
Agents from the Nogales Station set up a random checkpoint about 20 to 25 miles north of the border on Interstate-19 Saturday.
While inspecting a Phoenix woman's Nissan Sentra, the Border Patrol canine unit alerted agents to an odor around the 29-year-old woman's car.
Through an additional search, agents found a burrito-sized package of heroin that was inside a blown-up condom and tied at the top. The condom was filled with more than 10 ounces of brown heroin, worth an estimated $7,800 on the street.
The unnamed woman was charged with drug smuggling and was taken to the Nogales Border Patrol Station for processing.
A spokesman for the CBP station in Tucson said agents are used to finding narcotics and other items inside a suspect's body and inside vehicles.
