China recently became the first country to give five children ears that were grown in a laboratory using their own cells combined with a 3D-printed mould. Now, a Chennai-based hospital and a university may soon be the first in India to follow suit.

For the first time in the country, a collaborative project between SIMS Hospital and SRM University in the city has yielded a ground-breaking research technique – aiding the growth of ear cartilage cells. This could come as a boon for patients who suffer from congenital deformity and are in need of artificial ears. For three years, doctors and researchers have been growing ear cartilage cells using latest 3D printing technology and the cells are grown in the lab. They have been experimenting on animals so far and after their success, are awaiting an ethical clearance before they can operate on humans. This research will be beneficial for patients suffering from congenital deformity and those in need of artificial ear.
“3D printing has a bright future in our country and is a good option for people who need ears. Growing ears is just the beginning. We may soon use the procedures for other parts of the body,” Dr VV Bashi, Director of Cardiology at SIMS Hospital. The SIMS doctors will also discuss the future of perfectly compatible ears for patients waiting for a new lease of life with this latest technology at a media briefing on Tuesday, sharing details of the technology that could redefine the concept of regenerative medicine in India.
