Will oppose govt move to take over Jain temples: Community leader

Belagavi: Belagavi (Rural) MLA Sanjay Patil and Jain community leader of the city Rajiv Doddannavar alleged that the state government is planning to take over the prominent Jain temples and mutts under the muzrai department. The two leaders threatened to protest if the government went ahead with its plan.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Doddannavar said that the Jain community will condemn the move. The community will convene a meeting to discuss the issue once the Mahamastakabhisheka in Shravanabelagola draws to a close. "It's nothing, but the taking away the rights of the community and ruining the sanctity of spiritual places," he said.

Patil said that among all minority communities, the population of Jains is only 2% across the country. "On the one hand, the state government says it is working for the welfare of minority communities, on the other it is ruining their rights," he said.

Patil claimed that government has issued a notification on bringing Jain temples and mutts under the muzrai department.

Senior officers in the muzrai department in Belagavi, with condition of anonymity, said the government has not issued any such notification and it has not reached their office.
