The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office was involved in an active manhunt as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Sheriff’s deputies were chasing a man who tried to elude law enforcement for a potential speeding violation, according to Sheriff Jim Matthews.

A deputy attempted to pull over the driver of a late model Camaro, who was driving 72 in a 55 mph zone on US-601, Matthews said. Rather than stop, the driver tried to escape the deputy and drove down a dirt road, only to discover it ended abruptly.

The Camaro crashed and was buried in a creek, not far from ther Richland County line, according to Matthews, who said the driver then fled on foot.

Sheriff’s deputies continue to pursue the suspect, and have enlisted the aid of bloodhounds and a SLED helicopter.

Matthews said the sheriff’s office is 99 percent certain of the suspect’s identity, adding he has been pursued in the same car in the past by South Carolina Highway Patrol. The sheriff’s office has obtained DNA samples from the Camaro to confirm the suspect’s identity.
