Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations worldwide. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Outstation in Hamburg offers an international and stimulating environment for structural molecular biology research. It operates three highly brilliant synchrotron beamlines for protein crystallography and SAXS. The Sample Preparation and Characterization Facility (SPC) allows visitors (internal and external users) to apply quality assessments to their macromolecular samples to obtain the most optimal conditions for structural studies. It is hosted next to the EMBL beamlines with an extension to the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB). The EMBL SPC facility has a strong track record in the development and implementation of new technologies dedicated to structural biology approaches. The facility includes a large high-throughput crystallization platform and a wide array of instruments for molecular biophysics. The postholder will be trained on different biophysical characterization techniques and is expected to perform crystallization experiments. He/She will operate and maintain the equipment, and participate in the training of users. The successful applicant is expected to provide day-to-day support to the EMBL and international user community that will use the facility for routine and designed experimental services.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants are expected to have a bachelor degree in a relevant field (biology, chemistry or related disciplines). Working experience in biotechnology or biochemistry is essential. Experience in protein purification using ÄKTA systems, knowledge in protein crystallization and/or the use of biophysical instrumentation will be considered advantageous. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other researchers are essential. Good knowledge of desktop software applications is required. Fluency in English is mandatory and German language skills are desirable.
