The country has previously hosted a Summer Games, when the 24th Olympiad was hosted by Seoul in 1988.
And now 30 years later, the winter version is heading to Pyeongchang, which beat Munich and Annecy to the right to host during voting in 2011.
The first events of the 2018 Winter Olympiad will take place on Thursday February 8, with the curling and ski jumping preliminary rounds getting underway.
But the first medals of the games will not be awarded until Saturday February 10 with five golds on offer in sports ranging from biathlon to speed skating.
The opening ceremony will take place on the second day of the Olympiad at the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium, which has been built specifically for the games and seats 35,000 people. No events will be held there, only the opening and closing ceremonies.
The action is scheduled to get underway at 8pm on Friday February 9, which will be 11am UK time.
