BROCKTON - Two young children were found stabbed to death in Brockton on Monday, according to city officials.
The Office of Mayor Bill Carpenter sent out a robocall to members of the Brockton City Council on Monday afternoon confirming the stabbing deaths of two children in the city.
A massive response of Brockton police and firefighters descended on Prospect Street in Brockton after a report about two children dying from stab wounds.
Members of the Brockton City Council said that they receive an automated phone call from Carpenter's office confirming the stabbing deaths. Darren Duarte, chief of staff for the mayor, said he could not comment immediately when reached at 1 p.m.
The three-story residential building where the fatal stabbing took place is 247 Prospect St., on the second floor.
A neighbor told The Enterprise that he witnessed a woman living on the third floor calling down to a man who lives on the second floor, telling him to call the police around noon. The two children were reportedly siblings. The distraught woman was later brought to Good Samaritan Medical Center by ambulance.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz would provided few details about how the children died during a press conference held around 2:15 p.m. The two children had a relation, but Cruz declined to specify. The victims are believed to be ages 5 and 8, Cruz said.
"We are not in the position to give out a lot of information at this time," Cruz said. "It is an active investigation. If anybody has any information from this area, this location, please reach out and contact either Brockton Police, the Massachusetts Police or the Plymouth County DA's Office located in Brockton. ... I'm not really going to comment on the cause of death."
Cruz would not answer a question on whether there were any adults found at the third-floor apartment when police arrived.
"That's part of the investigation," Cruz said.
Traffic was closed off on both sides of the aging three-family home, which has faded gray paint, with a rug draped over the third floor balcony. Vehicles were being directed down Weston Street.
A different neighbor, named Elizabeth Gomes-Burton, who was watching the scene from her front steps on Weston Street home, said several families live in the house where the stabbing took place.
"I never really liked that house," Gomes-Burton said. "There was always a lot of noise and people hanging out outside."
Gomes-Burton said while she often saw people congregating around the house, she never saw police come around.
An animal control officer was later seen removing a single cat from the third floor apartment.
A few spectators gathered on the quiet street on Monday afternoon, along with several city officials. Brockton Police Chief John Crowley, Brockton Fire Chief Michael Williams, and a large group of detectives and police officers were seen outside the house. Carpenter, the mayor, was on scene, alongside Cruz.
No further information was immediately available.
"We are not in the position to give out a lot of information at this time," Cruz said.
