Rupee drops to 64.40

Mumbai, Feb 6

The rupee dropped by 33 paise to 64.40 against the US dollar on frantic dollar demand from importers and banks.

According to forex dealers, losses in domestic equity markets and fresh foreign fund outflows weighed on the rupee.

The domestic unit opened weak by 29 paise at 64.36 at the interbank foreign exchange market today. It hovered in a range 64.40 and 64.22 before quoting at 64.25, down 18 paise at 11.50 am local time.

Yesterday, the rupee had ended with a mere fall of one paisa at Rs 64.07 against the American currency.

Meanwhile, the Sensex was trading lower by 1,028.99 points or 2.99 per cent at 33,728.17 and the Nifty down by 312.55 points or 2.93 per cent at 10,354.
