Non-local among 8 booked in Kashmir for killing 6 cops

The police in Kashmir filed chargesheet eight people, including a non-local Sandeep Kumar, for planning and executing a deadly ambush in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district killing six policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO). In another south Kashmir area, a module of Pakistan based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) outfit was busted with arrest of local youngsters who have confessed their involvement in recent grenade attacks in  Pampore area.

Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) outfit had claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on June 15, which rattled the security circles in south Kashmir. 

Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Muzaffar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh was held when he was spotted in an area where encounter between security forces and militants was going on. Speaking to reporters Senior Superintendent of police Anantnag Altaf Khan said that the case was related to killing of SHO Achabal Feroz Ahmad Dar and five policemen in his escort vehicle, which was ambushed by militants.

He said that a special investigation team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case and after finding incontrovertible evidence against the accused, a comprehensive charge sheet has been filed against the before the Sessions Court Anantnag.

“Eight people have been found involved in the case, including two militants who have already been neutralised. Four are absconding and two are in judicial custody,” Khan said.

He said that a charge sheet has been filed against Kumar and one Muhammad Ashraf Wani alias Maulvi of Breenthi Anantnag along with the two slain militants of LeT -- Bashir Lashkari and Abu Maaz, a Pakistani national. Lashkari was killed in an encounter a few days after attack on police party.

“Efforts are on to arrest the absconding persons,” he said.

Meanwhile, police also claimed to have busted a JeM module involved in several grenade attacks in Pampore and Khrew areas of south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

Superintendent of Police Awantipora Mohammad Zahid said that five over-ground workers (OGWs) have been arrested. He claimed the module was set-up by slain JeM commander Noor Muhammad Tantray alias Noor Trali, who was killed in an encounter in December 2017.
