This letter is a follow up from the correspondence of last year in reference to the Urban Deer Hunt. Some of you may know that the hunt season was reduced from six months to six weeks. This certainly displays a common sense approach to controlling the deer herd. We thank those in charge for making the aforementioned improvement. I still dislike seeing any of our beautiful animals killed, but I certainly understand the need to control the population.
A point I’d like to make is something I have been fighting to stop for the past two years. We are still allowing unvetted strangers from outside the Village to wander near our homes with deadly weapons. As always, I make a stand that allowing them in without a thorough background check, will always be ludicrous. I have suggested to those in charge of the hunt to merely add a simple statement to their application. That being, “Have you ever been convicted of a felony?” This may still allow a few to slip through the cracks, but I have to believe it will be a strong enough deterrent to stop most.
I have resided here for 18 years and I have noticed over that time period that we are not exactly “loved” by folks outside the gates. May I be so bold as to assume that the deer head thrown onto DeSoto Blvd. was symbolic of a hunter’s distain of the Village residents?
Let’s promote the Urban Deer Hunt for residents only. Let’s insist that the Village take strides to improve the safety of its residents.
