BROOKINGS — Missing two key players, the Mitchell High School girls basketball team fell 70-60 to Brookings in an Eastern South Dakota Conference matchup on Monday.

Mitchell post players MacKenzie Miller and Chelsea Brewster both missed the game because of illness. Mitchell head coach Wes Morgan said his team had trouble adjusting.

"We ran our pressure but it took us awhile to defend them properly," Morgan said. "We took a big hit out of the middle and they exposed that right away."

Brookings opened the game on a 17-3 run and led 25-9 after the first quarter. The Kernels responded in the second quarter and outscored the Bobcats 24-16 in the frame to make the score 41-33 at halftime.

"Avia Haley sparked us a little bit," Morgan said. "We got a couple threes and some steals."

Brookings led 57-43 after three quarters and cruised to the win in the second half. Michaela Jewett led the Bobcats with 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Carolyn Hieb added 12 points and Grace Eggebrecht, Megan Gilk and Ava Burns each tossed in 11 points.

For Mitchell, Haley led the way with a team-high 14 points. Carly Haring added 11 points, Jordyn Cranny chipped in nine points and Camryn Krogman had eight points.

Morgan said he was happy with how Mitchell protected the ball, noting the team was averaging 20 turnovers per game and finished with 10 against Brookings.

"We played a different game and we still scored 60," Morgan said. "The kids played hard. We found out we have a couple freshmen that can help us."

Mitchell plays next Friday at Yankton, while Brookings plays Brandon Valley on Thursday in Brandon.
