Blast brings down chimney at Piney Power plant
Fire in the hole! a man yelled as the fuse was lit. With a puff of smoke from the top, those watching the event heard the explosion and felt a delayed rush of air hit them as they watched the chimney fall at the Former Piney Power plant in Piney Township Jan. 31. Although the chimney was said to still have many years left in its life, the owner chose to bring it down after not being able to sell it or utilize it in other ways. Maintaining the electric lighting on the chimney was too costly; the owner said it cost him $100 each time a light bulb burnt out on the tower. The lights were required for aircraft visibility. This series of photographs (above, above right and right) show the structure as it fell harmlessly to the ground.
