2 BNP men get anticipatory bail

The High Court yesterday granted anticipatory bail to BNP leaders Shawkat Mahmud and Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon in four separate cases filed over attacking police and snatching two accused from custody in Dhaka on January 30.

The bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debntah passed the orders after hearing four separate petitions.

The HC granted bail to Shawkat, a vice-chairman of BNP for eight weeks and ordered him to surrender before the lower court concerned in connection with the case.

Mahbub Uddin, a joint secretary general of BNP got bail till the submission of the police reports to the trial court in connection with three cases filed against him.

The accused BNP leaders, in the bail petitions said they were not in Dhaka during the incident  on January 30.

BNP activists on January 30 attacked a prison van and snatched two detained fellow men near the High Court area.

The incident happened while the motorcade of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia was crossing the area after a court hearing in Bakshibazar, witnesses said.

Later the cases were filed with Ramna and Shahbagh Police stations on charges of attacking police and snatching the accused.
