With more than 30 years of professional experience in the law, Mr. Brown founded Ohrenstein & Brown, LLP ("O&B") more than 34 years ago in 1983 with Manfred Ohrenstein, then the Democratic Leader in the New York State Senate. Mr. Brown's areas of expertise include commercial litigation, insurance litigation, insurance coverage issues and litigation, and the defense of professional liability claims. He also maintains an insurance regulatory practice including issues of self-insurance, captive insurance programs, the Federal Risk Retention Act, and federal regulation of the insurance industry.
Mr. Brown began his career by earning a BA in Government and English from Beloit College, and a JD from the New York University School of Law. He began his practice as an associate with Weil, Gothshal & Manges, and served as a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Special State Prosecutor for the Investigation of Corruption in New York City's Criminal Justice System. He has been a frequent lecturer in his areas of expertise and is counsel to many insurance programs organized by insurers and insurance brokers, helping to navigate regulatory and liability issues in the insurance industry.
As an expert in his field, Mr. Brown is often asked to litigate significant and unusual cases nationwide. In one case, he represented a satellite operator when several satellites failed due to design defects. He has represented hospitals in RICO litigations with HMOs, and he recently succeeded in recovering $20 million from an MGA and a captive insurer for one of his insurance company clients in a case that was litigated in the federal and state courts of New York, California, Montana and South Carolina. Mr. Brown has served as chair of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York Subcommittee on Insurance Demutualization. His contributions have earned him recognition as a New York metropolitan area "Super Lawyer," and his Firm has been recognized by
U.S. News & World Report.
